Spring at Quabbs: Lambs, Blooms & Bliss

I've noticed spring at Quabbs doesn’t arrive all at once. It sneaks in, quietly at first—a snowdrop here, a hint of warmth in the breeze there—until one day, you realise the hills are turning green again, and the birds are singing their hearts out at dawn. And just like that, winter’s grip loosens, and life on the farm shifts gears into something a little more... lively.

Life on the Farm: A Spring Symphony

If you’ve ever watched a lamb take its first wobbly steps, you’ll know spring is pure magic. Our Zwartbles sheep—big, bold, over-friendly and unmistakably stylish with their dark wool and white facial markings and our fluffball Swiss Valais — welcome their little ones, and suddenly, the fields are full of tiny, bouncy lambs and the cuteness factor is off the scale.

It’s not just the lambs feeling the spring energy. The whole farm wakes up. The hedgerows start filling with primroses and violets, and soon enough, the bluebells will be putting on their annual show. The bees are back, buzzing about like they’ve got somewhere very important to be, and the birds? Well, they’re in full matchmaking mode. Every morning, the dawn chorus feels like nature’s version of an overenthusiastic choir rehearsal.

Spring at the Cabin: A Time to Unwind and Reconnect

While the farm is full of action (we are so busy at this time of year!), the cabin remains a little oasis of calm. There’s something about spring mornings here—throwing open the doors, feeling that crisp, fresh air roll in, and wrapping your hands around a steaming mug of coffee while the world wakes up around you. The wraparound porch comes into its own this time of year—perfect for lazy afternoons with a book or an evening drink while watching the hills glow golden at sunset. It feels like a treat after the grey winter months and lashings of rain.

The woodfired hot tub is a dream in spring. There’s still a nip in the air, but that just makes it all the better—sliding into warm, steamy water while birds flit about in the trees and the occasional curious sheep wanders past, eyeing you with mild disapproval. And if you really want to embrace the contrast.

Exploring Mid Wales in Spring

If you can tear yourself away from the comforts of the cabin (and believe me, it’s a struggle), the surrounding countryside is buzzing with new life. Offa’s Dyke Path is one of my favourite walks in spring—winding through rolling hills, past sleepy villages, and ancient woodlands that are just starting to burst into green. There’s a fresh, earthy scent in the air, the streams are full of rushing water, and every now and then, you catch sight of a red kite gliding lazily overhead.

Further afield, the National Trust properties are looking their absolute best—Powis Castle, Croft Castle, and Hergest Croft Gardens are all draped in blossom and fresh blooms. And, of course, a long walk is best finished with a stop at a country pub, where a roaring fire and a plate of something hearty are always waiting.

The Promise of Spring

Spring at Quabbs is all about promise. It’s that delicious sense of things waking up, stretching, and getting ready for the riot of colour that summer will bring. Whether you come to watch lambs skipping about, to soak up the silence of the hills, or just to sit with a cup of tea and breathe for a while, this season has a way of making life feel simpler. Slower. Sweeter.

So, as the first daffodils bob their heads in the breeze and the swallows make their grand return, we welcome you to come and experience spring with us—where life is a little wilder, a little more peaceful, and full of those moments that make you stop and really take it all in.
