Wellies, Work & Weekends: The Double Life of a Farmer-Teacher-Cabin Owner

Some people have a work-life balance. We have a work-work-work balance, with a side of sheep and a smattering of sawdust. By day (weekdays, that is), I wander through the corridors of a large city school, responsible, polished (ish), and professional. By evening and weekends, I swap the sensible shoes for wellies, the whiteboard markers for sheep feed, and the staff meetings for cabin bookings. My husband, the builder, floats somewhere in between, existing in a perpetual state of sawdust-covered brilliance.

Paul, Hear Me Out: A Tale of Bargains, Junk, and Patience

It’s a very good job that:

Paul trusts me.
Paul has a good sense of humour.
Paul is patient.
Paul is forgiving.
Paul has a van and fetches things.
Paul knows me inside out.

Otherwise, we may not actually be celebrating 35 years of marriage this year. I might be a sad and lonely old woman, surrounded by junk and animals. But, let me tell you, these things happen to me—and more often than you’d think!

Fancy a dip?
If, like me, you’re partial to a paddle (or a full-on wild swim followed by a biscuit and a flask of tea), then you’re in luck. I’ve gathered up my favourite nearby swim spots—all within half an hour of the cabin. Think clear rivers, peaceful banks, and the odd heron for company. I’ve popped in directions from LD7 1PD and added a few words about staying safe, because while I love a bit of adventure, I love a sensible toe-dip first even more.

Why Bluebells Capture the Nation’s (and my) Heart

A sea of blue, a moment of magic
each spring, our hidden corners of Mid Wales come alive with a spellbinding shimmer of bluebells. Winding woodland paths and quiet dells near the cabin are transformed into carpets of violet-blue — nature’s own hush falling over the land. Whether you’re wandering hand in hand, snapping photos, or just breathing in that earthy-sweet scent, it’s a fleeting, fairytale season that reminds us to slow down and soak it all in. At Quabbs, the bluebells aren’t just flowers — they’re little messengers of wonder and we love them.

The Farmer’s Wife

As we stumble through the sticky mud of farming life – many things spring to mind, not least that I was referred to as a ‘farmer’s wife’ for the first time. I was proud, I was tickled pink, then I was a bit annoyed and then I questioned it and then I thought I am NOT a farmer’s wife – I am a farmer.
